About the Event

Join us for our first ever in-person, outdoor book club to discuss The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by local author Deesha Philyaw.

"Broken up into nine short stories, The Secret Lives of Church Ladies gives readers a peek into the lives of multiple women over four generations...While the collection of stories follows a slew of different religious Black women and girls, the one thing they all have in common is their deeply relatable struggle and yearning to express their individuality while trying to find themselves in the discipline of their beliefs. It’s incredibly moving. Even if one doesn’t personally practice a religion, readers will find a piece of themselves in one of the characters. We can all connect with the feeling of trying to fit, or break out of, a mold created by our society or upbringing." - Jordan Snowden, City Paper

LOGISTICS + NOTICE:

We plan to meet at the main Millvale Riverfront Park Pavilion (rain or shine!) attached to the public restrooms and adjacent to the parking lot. Feel free to bring your own snacks and refreshments.

We are relying on all of you to be responsible and follow CDC guidelines for gathering outdoors. Masks will not be required, but please be respectful of others safety.

BRING YOUR OWN drink and snacks. Given the current situation, W+iD will not be providing any shared food or drinks!

ADDITIONAL READING:

We also recommend reading Ms. Philyaw's Bloomberg CityLab piece: The Not-So Secret Lives of Black Pittsburgh Women. "I have won multiple awards and an HBO deal for my 2020 book The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, and even I can no longer afford to live in Pittsburgh."
